What is Burning Man?
Burning Man is one of the world’s most unique and transformative festival experiences, held annually in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. More than just a music festival, it’s a temporary city of art, self-expression, and radical community that attracts over 70,000 participants from around the globe.
When and Where
Dates: Burning Man takes place during the last week of August through the first Monday in September (Labor Day weekend in the United States).

The event runs for 9 days, culminating in the burning of a massive wooden effigy known as “The Man” on Saturday night, followed by the Temple Burn on Sunday night.

What to Expect
Art Installations
The desert transforms into an open-air art gallery featuring massive sculptures, interactive installations, and mind-bending structures. These range from towering metal sculptures to intricate temples, all created by artists from around the world.
Theme Camps
Hundreds of theme camps offer everything from yoga classes to techno dance parties, from fine dining experiences to creative workshops. Each camp contributes something unique to the community.
Music and Performance
While not primarily a music festival, Burning Man features incredible DJ sets, live performances, and sound camps operating 24/7. Every genre imaginable can be found somewhere on the playa.
Mutant Vehicles
Art cars (called “mutant vehicles”) roam the desert – massive mobile art pieces ranging from pirate ships to dragons to floating lotus flowers, many equipped with sound systems and lights.

Getting Tickets
Tickets typically go on sale in early spring and sell out quickly. There’s a main sale and a lottery system. Prices range from around $575 for general admission to $1,400+ for vehicle passes are additional.
What to Bring
- Water: At least 1.5 gallons per person per day
- Food: All meals for the entire week
- Shelter: A sturdy tent and shade structure
- Clothing: Costumes, layers for extreme temperature changes (40°F-100°F+)
- Dust protection: Goggles, dust masks, and sealed bags for everything
- Bike: Essential for getting around the 7+ square mile city
- Lights: You must be visible at night (LED lights, glow sticks, etc.)
- Gifts: Small items to share with fellow burners

The Challenges
The Environment
The Black Rock Desert is one of the harshest environments in North America. Extreme heat during the day, freezing temperatures at night, blinding dust storms, and the alkaline playa dust that gets into everything are all part of the experience.
No Commerce
The only things for sale are ice and coffee at Center Camp. Everything else operates on a gift economy. There are no food vendors, no ATMs, no stores.
Leave No Trace
You must pack out everything you bring in, including gray water. The Bureau of Land Management conducts inspections, and participants work hard to leave the desert pristine.
The Magic
Despite (or perhaps because of) these challenges, Burning Man creates a unique space for creativity, connection, and transformation. Participants often describe it as life-changing – a place where radical self-expression meets radical acceptance, where strangers become family, and where the impossible becomes possible.
The Burns
The festival culminates in two major burns:
- The Man Burn (Saturday night): The iconic 40+ foot wooden figure is set ablaze in a spectacular ceremony
- The Temple Burn (Sunday night): A more solemn, spiritual event where participants say goodbye to the week
